  • I'm sorry but I don't speak any German. I saw this thread:

which (from Google translate) may be similar to my problem but I thought it better to start a new thread in English.

We have a Froling S3 Turbo in a holiday home in France we bought 5 years ago, it was apparently installed in 2014. I have no previous experience with biomass boilers. It was working fine (once I found a manual in English online!) until last September when the circulation (radiators) pump failed and tripped the whole house electrics when it started. We found a Wilus replacement pump and fitted it in June, we tested it with a separate power lead and all seemed OK but the weather was a bit warm to fire up the boiler. Jump to last week (I'm only there a couple of times a year) and I fired it up and it heated up the accumulator/big water tank but wouldn't run the pump. When I powered the pump independently the Froling then turned the flow temperature down to minimum -not helpful! The stored water temperature was 85C, the room temperature was 16C and the requested room temperature was 22C, the requested flow temperature was 65C.

I know it can run the pump as the pump's display lights up briefly when the Froling is first powered on, it also ran it briefly once when I was paging through all the menu settings to understand what was going on.

I'm no longer at the house but I did go through photographing every menu page on the display (in English).

Getting someone out to look at it will be inconvenient as I'm not planning to go out again until the spring (I live in the UK), my sister lives 70km away but isn't that technically minded. The house is up in the Vercors mountains so getting a technician to travel there can be an issue sometimes.

I hope someone here can understand my English and help me with this problem.

  • When you replaced the pump did you set it to external PWM control? If not, it will always run at the default set speed when power is applied.

Use translate.google.com on this thread to see an example where someone needed to change the Wilo pump mode.:

Hopefully this simple change is all you need. You could download the Wilo manual and see if you think your sister could change it. On my pump it just requires me to press one button until the right LED indicator lights up. The Froling would need to call for the pump to start before this can be changed (pump must have power).

The Froling has multiple settings for controlling a PWM pump. The main two are:
    - PWM ambient pump (230 V voltage is constantly applied to the pump, PWM speed control)

    and:

    - PWM pump + valve (230 V voltage is only applied when the pump is requested, PWM speed control)

If yours is set to the +valve option then the pump might light up briefly at first then it would turn off again. It would only turn back on when there is a call for the pump to run. All of the pumps may be disabled until the boiler reaches the set operating temperature (pump release temperature setting).

  • Thanks for your reply.

I don't think the pump has PWM control, it only has a 230V connection and the speed setting is done manually on the pump:

(the original pump also has only a 230V connection)

Maybe the Froling is expecting to use PWM control, but if that's true then I would expect the pump power to be always on. I assume that for this system the pump is just on or off and temperature control is done via the mixing valve before the pump.

  • no, there is no possibility to run a PWM pump as a radiator pump from Fröling S3200 point of view. Having a 230 V pump without PWM control is the right choice.

There are a few settings which cause the pump to turn on or off depending on outside temperature or System temperatures:

-) Radiator pump is allowed to run, when boiler temperature is above X °C

-) Outside temperature X °C, under which the radiator pump is turning on

-) Radiator pump turns off, if radiator temperature is less than X °C

    -) Minimum radiator temperature

Check these temperatures in the service access in the boiler and heating circuit settings. Maybe one of these parameters will cause the pump not to turn on.

    Best regards

  • Holzheizer12345, thanks for the comment about not allowing PWM control of heating circuit pumps. The Froling does not control my heating circuits so I missed that detail. You might also be able to confirm that it does make sense that the heating circuit mixer output is set to the minimum value until the boiler turns on the pump. Only when the water is flowing will it increase the mixer output temperature up to the target value and this may take a few minutes. The boiler will not know to adjust the mixer if you bypass the boiler control and manually power the pump.

In addition to the points you mentioned, it might also be related to the time of day since a heating schedule can be set. Or, if the boiler also heats the domestic hot water the heating circuit can be set to a lower priority so it won't run until the domestic hot water demand is met.

It sounds like someone that can look into all these details on site will be required.

  • Update:

It looks like it was an RTFM problem. The heating was apparently switched off at the room controller (by another family member, after the pump failed and tripped the electrics). Having moved the room controller a while ago and noticed it only had two wires I didn't think the 4-position switch actually did anything but I guess it can still do on/off, I hadn't thought to check it. On the Froling menus the clue was a setting that said "Override: Off", which I took to mean that there was no override but I now believe means that there is an override turning the heating off -maybe it's less ambiguous in the original German? Anyway, my sister changed the switch on the room controller and that menu setting now says "Override: Auto". She didn't fire it up to test it but I'm fairly confident it'll work now.
